This topic is for discussion on the paper entitled, "Global Warming: Reversing the Trend" on charles-chandler.org.

This is just an idea that I had after watching one too many Discovery Channel shows on how we've screwed up the environment, and it's already too late to fix it, and within 100 years the climate is going to run out of control, and everybody is going to die.

Since then, I really haven't done any research on this topic, but I run across discussions every now and then to the effect that there is a lot of debate as to whether or not global warming is actually real, and if it is, whether or not we actually had anything to do with it.

Regardless, the concept explored in this paper has interesting implications. The idea of being able to deliberately control the Earth's climate shouldn't be dismissed off-hand. It's possible that global warming is part of a natural process of warming and cooling, and that it will get warmer for a while, and then it will get cooler, and then there will be another Ice Age, and then it will get warmer again..... This will all happen long after we're dead. But few humans will survive another Ice Age. The possibility of being able to regulate the climate, to the point of stopping this see-sawing of temperatures, opens up the possibility of the long-term survival of the human race. Otherwise, we've got another 10,000 years or so before we'll get wiped out.

What effect will global warming have on invading killer bees? I was wondering what the effects of global warming would be on the swarms of killer bees that are going to be invading sometime soon. Has any research been done into this question? Or were the bees all killed by acid rain, or fried by the hole in the ozone before they could get here?

 10,000 years?????? That's stretching it. Humanity should be long gone before the next Ice Age.

Oh no, not a catastrophist! But I am an anti-catastrophist! How shall we destroy ourselves? I'll get right to work on that...

Methane is a potent greenhouse gas (GHG) thought to be abundant in the deep ocean and in permafrost. Compare the global warming potential of methane to other GHG’s. What are the potential feedback implications of global warming with respect to these methane sources?

I'm not even sure that I understand the question, but I'm pretty sure that I don't know the answer. :D To my knowledge, some of the methane is from organic material that was forced into the Earth's crust in tectonic subduction zones. Other sources are less well-understood, and some believe that there are inorganic mechanisms for the production of hydrocarbons deep in the mantle. All very speculative stuff. Anyway, surface temperatures certainly affect organic deposits at the ocean floor, which can then be subducted. So a change in atmospheric temperature would alter the amount of methane being released after subduction, which would then affect atmospheric temperatures. Is that the kind of feedback that you mean? If so, I have no idea whether it's a positive or negative feedback loop, or what the significance might be anyway.
